I'm not sure when, but Mark died from cancer shortly after our 10-year reunion. You may remember he was going through chemo at that time.

I miss you Mark--think about you a lot.

Mark's death hit me really hard at the time, and for long afterwards; so much so that I think I suppressed it from my mind for a long time and tried to pretend it didn't happen.  When I was still practicing law in Los Angeles, he was a lawyer in Dallas.  I had a case that took me to Dallas a few times and Mark always put me up and he and his wife made me dinner.  Long before that, I counted Mark as one of my very closest friends, one of those people you share everything with. There's no replacing a friend like that.  We even lived together in Dallas briefly right after graduation, before I figured out that selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door would not pay the rent, and moved back to Ft. Smith to read water meters -- a job Kenny Dougherty's father got me.  My funniest memory (and I have dozens) is probably when I convinced him to drive one of his almost-new Fords -- his dad was a Ford dealer -- up to White Rock mountain on an absolutely terrible road.  We both thought that car would fall apart and Mark was worried the entire trip that his dad would be furious with him for taking that car on such an awful road.  The view was worth it, though.
